Why Me? The Addictive Personality and Some of Its Traits - Part Two

Previously, we talked about the addict and his ability to conceal his addiction and the cost of his addiction to himself, but what is the cost of his addictions on other people such as his workmates, friends but most importantly his family? What you must understand is that an addict, whether he (or she) is addicted to drink, drugs, alcohol or even sex, yes you can be addicted to sex, in any shape or form, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. It does not have to be physical to be an addiction, you can be addicted to something emotionally, they call that a "crutch". ANYWAY THAT'S FOR ANOTHER ARTICLE AND ANOTHER DAY.

Back to how an addiction effects everyone the addict knows. You see, if nothing else every addict has a few common traits, no matter what the addiction. One that certainly applies to all is "SELFISHNESS". An addict only ever thinks of himself, and no one else, or how his addiction will affect anyone else. That's why every addict will make an excuse to get out of mundane things, like going to the supermarket, "OH I'VE GOT TO CATCH UP WITH SOME PAPERWORK", or if he needs to get out of the house, then he might say, "I'VE GOT TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE GARAGE, SOMETHING DOESN'T SOUND RIGHT". You see the difference? One will let the addict stay in the house and go onto his favorite website to get his or her fix. The other will give him an excuse to go out and pursue his embarrassing addiction. It could be a addictive affair or to partake in an illicit behavior, such as drug taking or visiting a working girl.

Whatever the reason, this is the action of a selfish person. To the addict, this is normal behavior, so normal in fact that it becomes second nature to him. The addict never stops to think of the impact on his family when his sordid web of deceit unfolds. How would you feel, if the bailiffs came to your house demanding items to the value of say, ten thousand pounds, dollars or euros? You thought you knew this person, i mean you've been together for 20 years, of course you knew them, but no, you didn't, did you?
