Food addictions have become increasingly common. Sometimes we eat because we are bored or because certain foods make us feel euphoric. Whatever the reason, this often goes beyond mere cravings and is very unhealthy. Also, we weaken ourselves when we repeat an addictive habit and this can continue into other areas such as illegal drugs, playing world of warcraft all day or spending too much time in a casino.
There are particular foods that release certain chemicals the create euphoric feelings in people. Foods like cheese, meat, chocolate, candy and salty foods, cause the brain to want more of it. Eating other foods can break this pattern and sometimes just changing the routine can change the habit. Some research indicates that eating starchy foods and smaller amounts of protein can counteract the reaction that causes food addictions and cravings. This is because complex carbs like potatoes and rice breakdown slower which gives the body a constant glucose supply. Whereas sweets give a quick energy rush and glucose and then it's gone.
Another way to stop the pattern is to eat breakfasts that are higher in fiber. Eating foods high in fiber will make you fuller longer. If you add fruit to that breakfast, you will have a balance combination of sugar and fiber. This will satisfy your need for energy and makes your body feel fuller, thus limiting the amount of between meal snacking.
Food addictions and cravings can become a very serious condition. Body weight can easily increase, causing obesity and the slew of health problems that entails. Eating foods with lots of sugar can ruin your teeth and internal organs. The best way to fight this is to eat a well balanced diet with a mixture of vegetables, fruit, meats, and fiber; Limit the sugars to the bare minimum. When one develops an addictive pattern of behavior, it also is easy to give in to other addictive substances such as drug abuse, gambling problems and computer internet addiction habits.
